A short walk from the car park across the field, which can at times become waterlogged and muddy. This is probably our best all-round fishery on the upper Thames individual anglers often top 100lbs bags of fish, anglers can target any fish using almost any method and stand a reasonable chance of success with specimen fish like barbel, chub, bream, and even carp being well represented amongst the roach, dace and perch that make this a very excellent fishery.

Good swims found from the very start of this fishery make even those unable to walk long distances able to have a chance of bagging on this venue. To the left up to the railway bridge you can fish from a tree lined bank and one weight recently returned was 39lbs of fish, it included bream, chub and one barbel of 6lb 10ozs. The noted swims, just to the right as the river is reached, are a few of the many that have been known to produce the top weights, this area known as the stumps. Moving down the river the hump is another favoured part of the fishery. The part known as the backwater is in reality the main river. The river passes over a weir and winds down and round a bend to the end of the fishery, no boats on this part due the fact they proceed from the weir along the lock cut and away from the fishery. This end is a long walk, regardless of which entrance is used, now overgrown to some extent it is the best part of the fishery to actually target the barbel and carp. Very often carp can be seen close in along with very big chub.

ROUTE - From London take the M40 to Junction 6 then onto the B4009 to Benson, turn left onto A1074 to Wallingford roundabout. Straight over at the next roundabout proceed on to the last roundabout of the by-pass turn left A4130 at roundabout junction with the A4016 turn towards Appleford. You are now in Sinodun Row turn right into Church Street then left into Gales Farm complex.

PARKING - Members should refrain from parking in school lane. All cars to be parked at Gales Farm, proceed to the end of the farm buildings, turn left through the gate and into a large secure car park which is clearly sign-posted. Members should park in appropriate designated area only.

Improved access to River via the gate leading from Car Park, which consists of a hardcore walkway, over marshy ground.

Members should not smoke in any area of the farm or this parking area will be terminated, this also includes smoking within your vehicles.

N.B. The unloading or
loading of vehicles is
strictly prohibited outside
the church or the road leading to it.

BOUNDARIES - South Bank Appleford. From the moor ditch upstream to within 50yds of the railway bridge. The weir pool is included. The weir structure is private. Members must allow cattle free access to the cattle drinks on this bank.

ACCESS - South Bank. From the car park walk though the gate into field and then to the river. Improved access to River via the gate leading from Car Park, which consists of a hardcore walkway, over marshy ground. Two footpaths from Long Wittenham. From the cul-de-sac part of the Main Street. The first designated by a finger post. The second is alongside the caravan site at the far end of the street. From both footpaths walk across the open field to a white painted bridge structure. Turn right and follow the Moor Ditch to its confluence with the river. From Appleford walk down the road leading to Appleford church and the entrance to the fishery is through the field behind the church.

but may not fish and must be controlled completely by their parents.
