SPECIES -
The canal is known for its roach and these often used to be found at around the pound mark with many fish almost reaching two pounds however over recent years the bream shoals have been taking over and the average size of roach seems to be dropping. At the Hunton bridge end you can expect roach plus plenty of gudgeon with chub not being to uncommon carp are often the bonus fish and the biggest reported is 36lbs this from the Tring end of the canal. Their numbers make it possible to be worth fishing for them especially if the swim is known to be a holding spot for them.  But because its the canal the tackle needs to be scaled down to ensure success. Bream do show from the odd swim at the bottom end but as we move up the canal towards Tring the chub tend to show less with bream becoming much more evident. Some of the known swims further up the canal have produced heavy bags of bream even as high as 100lbs have been reported. In recent years two barbel have been reported as caught from the canal one exceeded 4lbs. Crayfish are causing problems on some parts these will take almost any bait and make presentation to fish difficult when they are most active.
The canal varies from pound to pound due to small rivers running in and out at points along its coarse. This means that parts of the canal will either be flowing at one point or completely still in the next pound the only movement caused by boats using the locks. Some parts may be clear and a short distance away coloured by water flowing from a small river.
The ‘Association’ controls 14 miles of the Grand Union Canal from Hunton Bridge to Tring. This consists of mainly towpath but on some short parts fishing is to be had from far bank.
The best way to find the canal is from London take the M25 to junction 20 at this point the canal runs under the motorway just before the slip road onto A41. Following the old route of A41 from this point towards Tring and all the access points are to the right on almost any of the roads. The A41 bypass road can be used to get to the higher parts and avoid the slow traffic in the towns.
We will start this part of the canal at  RED LION LANE  parking by the bridge over the canal and you can walk downstream for TOOVEY’S MILL.  Walking upstream is the pound known as NASH MILLS. This can also be reached by parking on the A41 opposite 'APSLEY STATION', at this point a short footpath can be found that brings you onto the canal towpath. The next access to the canal is DURRANTS HILL ROAD,  parking can be found in front of the childrens play area, opposite this you can turn into FROGMORE ROAD  and parking and access can be found at the extreme end.  This part of the fishery is usually called  DURRANTS HILL ROAD.  At the next point TWO WATERS ROAD and on to STATION ROAD, we are in HEMEL HEMPSTEAD.  The best parking is just off STATION ROAD.
